Mood Boards: How to Use Them to Plan Your Wedding
A mood board? Is that, like, something that helps you identify your feelings? Not really. Well what are they? Mood boards are a great tool when planning a wedding. They do have pictures but they aren’t necessarily of things you want for your wedding. I know; it’s a little confusing. Let’s break it down. Mood boards are a representation of the overall feel, theme, or vibe of your event.
Mood Board Breakdown
Let’s use my personal wedding mood board for an example.
There are many elements in a mood board. I usually include : one fabric, one metallic, and one texture. The gold background serves as the metallic item, pearls are for texture, and the chiffon is my fabric of choice. I chose to use my board for dresses and what people were going to wear and set out the specific colors that I wanted my bridesmaids to wear. I did include some bouquets simply so I wouldn’t forget. There is also a cake because it is so unique and I couldn’t help myself.

As you can see, my wedding evolved into something very 1920s inspired with a lot of pearls and feathers.
A mood board can be used for literally anything. I use them as business inspiration and for home decor. What are some other good opportunities to use a mood board?
Mood Board Examples for Wedding Planning
I like to identify the metallic, texture, and fabric in a mood board. Not all of them have a metallic element to them, though. If that’s the case, I always look for an extra texture. I like to give each mood board 3-5 good descriptive words to find the overall feel.

- Organic
- Soft.
Many people would describe this board as cottage-core.
- Dark
- Moody
- Historic
- Structured
Personally, I would call this one gothic.
- Fresh
- Bright
- Crisp
I would say that this board definitely has a west coast vibe to it.
- Urban
- Vintage
- Lush
I feel transported to 1920s Chicago.
- Etheral
- Whimsical
- Dainty
- Cool
This board reminds me of early spring in a northeastern state.
- Lively
- Glamorous
- Fun
This board looks like it was taken from a New Year’s Eve wedding.
- Intentional
- Timeless
- Elegant
I could 100% see these photos from a country-club wedding.
